Interview with Award-winning Author Sarah Albee and a Giveaway!

Sarah Albsarah-albee1ee is the author of more than 100 children’s books. She has had three of her books appear on the New York Times children’s bestseller list.  She currently has an upper-middle-grade, nonfiction book published in May, 2010 about the history of toilets and sanitation entitled POOP HAPPENED! A History of the World from the Bottom Up, and a follow-up title under contract due out in 2013 about how insects have affected human history. She blogs daily on a variety of science and social history topics geared toward middle-grade readers (sarahalbeebooks.com/blog). She spent nine years as an editor at Children’s Television Workshop, working primarily for Sesame Street and attending both the Bologna and Frankfurt Book Fairs.

Thanks for joining us Sarah! Here are some questions we have for you: 

You write both fiction and nonfiction- Do you like one genre better?

I love that I get to do both. And I do think writing for different genres is a great opportunity. My fiction editors appreciate that I like to do research. And my nonfiction editors appreciate that I know how to tell a story. At present, though, my passion is nonfiction.

  What was it like working at Sesame Street?

It was a fantastic place to work. I landed a job there soon after I graduated from college. I loved the humor, the music, the travel, the creativity—and just being surrounded by so many talented people. It was a dream job.

                       

Your nonfiction books are so much fun! How did you get interested in writing nonfiction?

Thanks for that! I’ve always been interested in nonfiction. As a kid, I read the World Book Encyclopedia for fun. It’s only been in the last 6-7 years, though, that I’ve been able to devote larger chunks of time to researching and writing longer, middle-grade books. For years, when my kids were young, I wrote a lot of work-for-hire and younger fiction and nonfiction. It was fun, and rewarding, and I learned how to meet tight deadlines and never get writer’s block. But now that my kids are older and don’t need me around as much, I feel like I’m in a new phase and I’m loving the flexibility to choose a topic I’m passionate about and plunge into it.

 Three of your nonfiction books, including your newest, take a specific topic from the beginning of civilization to the present time. Why so broad a category?


I often ask myself that very question—why do I keep writing the same book over and over–the history of the whole world from ancient times to the present? But what I love to do is to trace one theme chronologically through human history, ideally a theme that kids will find interesting. First sanitation (okay, poop), then insects, and now, with my new book, crazy fashions. Chronology is really important to me. Some might call a broad sweep through history superficial, but often kids don’t get enough context when they study historical units in school. They might study ancient Egypt, or the American Revolution, but they may not have a good sense where and when these events fall on the historical continuum. And the beauty of tracing a theme through history is that I am not limited to one time or place—I can take a snapshot of the world from multiple places and perspectives, as long as I can relate them all to my theme. For instance, in Why’d They Wear That? in the chapter on the seventeenth century, I was able to include the Pilgrims in America, Oliver Cromwell in England, Louis XIV in France, sedan chairs, tanning leather, and the weird trend of wearing face patches—because I could tie everything together with fashion.

 How much time does it take you to research one of these books? Where do you start?

                                                

I spend about a year doing research—but it’s not all I’m doing, of course. I usually have various book projects in different phases at the same time. For instance, I just finished two new book proposals, and am working on a first draft for my 2017 book, but am beginning research on a new idea. And my new book, Why’d They Wear That? (National Geographic), launched on February 10th so I’ve been super busy with publicity for that.

For research, I have the greatest library nearby—my husband is a high school teacher, and we live close to his school. His school’s library has fantastic subscriptions to various academic search engines, and the librarians are awesome and helpful. I make frequent trips to DC to research at the Library of Congress and the National Archives, and then, depending on my topic, to more specialized academic libraries. I also interview experts, in person if possible, but also via Skype.

  Do you travel to places to research your books or do it from your house?

A little of both. Every place I go—whether it’s a school visit in another state, a family vacation, or a museum trip—I see as a research opportunity. And whenever I can, I visit a place I want to write about, to get a feel for the sights, sounds, and smells. I’ve been to the Paris sewers, and Lyon, France where they still make silk, and a cotton mill museum in Lowell, Massachusetts so I could hear for myself how deafening the sound of the looms are. And last fall, I visited the poison plants garden at Cornell University to research a future book project.

 Can you tell us three fun and unexpected facts you discovered when researching your latest book?

Early versions of men’s athletic trunks—the kinds acrobats and boxers wore in the late nineteenth/early twentieth century—were the same in front and back, which must have resulted in a terrible wedgie.

Shoes, even for the wealthy, who could afford custom-made shoes, did not come in right and left until the latter part of the nineteenth century.

As late as the nineteenth and even early twentieth century, most young boys in Europe and America from well-to-do families wore petticoats up until the age of six or seven, when they’d be “breeched,” and dressed in pants. Once you start looking for them in portrait paintings, you start to see boys in dresses everywhere.

Okay, one more: 4. In seventeenth century Venice, most men, women, and children wore masks for a huge part of the year, and not just during Carnival season. It made it hard to tell the identity, or social class—or even the gender, sometimes—of most people, and allowed them to participate in some serious debauchery incognito. It was quite a bizarre phenomenon.

 What tips can you give people if they want to write nonfiction? 

Find a topic you feel passionate about, and don’t worry about whether it will “sell.” It’s a really exciting time for nonfiction right now—there’s so much great nonfiction being published, and writers can really develop their own voice and style, more than ever before.

Tips on Getting Organized: An interview with author and management consultant Naheed Hasnat

Senzai, is an award-winning children’s book author (Shooting Kabul and Saving Kabul Corner) who also happens to be high-level Silicon Valley management consultant. I’ve been wowed not only by Naheed’s writing but also by her professional and life organizational skills. So today, we’re going to pick Naheed’s brain about organization.

Naheed, you wear a couple of professional hats. You do management consultant for Fortune 500 Companies and you a very busy and acclaimed children’s book author. In fact, we’ve had you’re here at the Mixed up Files in 2012 to speak about your celebrated novel Shooting Kabul (written under the name N.H. Senzai). What I want to know is how to do you do it all? So my first question is with your very busy job and family life responsibilities, how do you find time to write? For example, do you write consistently a little bit several days a week or do you squirrel away time on weekends?

Working, parenting, doing housework and writing can be a juggling act for sure! I try to stick to a pretty regimented schedule during the week, which is guided in part by the needs of our family. My son is in bed by 7:30, so after that I’m free to write. When I’m under contract to finish a book, I’m pretty regimented and write every day. It helps that my husband writes extensively for his work so we negotiate “writing time!” on the weekends. When I’m brainstorming a new book, things are a bit more relaxed. I will also confess that the housework sometimes does tend to slide…but oh well.

As a management consultant, you help companies prioritize goals and help them run more efficiently. What are some of the biggest mistakes you see folks making in terms of efficiency? As in those of us who feel as if we’re spinning our wheels, putting in a lot of effort for not enough result?

I cannot emphasize enough the need to plan and organize before you start a project, and that includes writing. Having a business background I first assess a book idea by asking a few basic questions – where does this book idea fit into the market? Are there other books like it? Did they sell? I will also run the idea by my agent, because if he doesn’t think he can sell it, then I may need to rethink the concept. Once I have an idea and I know there is a place for it in the market then I begin the process of starting the project of writing.

In terms of project management, are there some best practices for starting your workday?

Initiate. Plan. Execute. Close. That’s project management in a nutshell and it applies to writing. You initiate your book by first verifying it has a place in the market (questions above) then you need to plan out how you will write it, which involves setting up the tools you will use (Microsoft word, excel, a chalkboard, software tools like scrivener… whatever gets the job done). Then you execute your plan – I make a schedule on writing and use excel quite a lot (more on this in the following question) Then you write a brilliant book and close.

What are some tips, for writers who are also balancing lots on their plate to make the most of their writing time?

First, you need to make writing a priority and schedule it into your day. Second, as I mentioned, you need to be organized. When you are about to finish writing for the day, make some notes on what you will be tackling in the next writing session – developing plot lines, fleshing out characters or doing research that is needed for the story.

You write novels with multi-strands, often involving research. How do you keep track of all of your research?

First I create a folder on my computer for each manuscript. Within that I have sub folders on research I’m collecting, labeled by topic. Within the folders I keep word documents where I cut and paste information I’ve collected, pdfs I’ve found, pictures, website links, youtube videos etc. Second, I maintain an excel sheet with multiple tabs for different elements of the story – time-lines, characters bios, plot lines, settings etc. I keep notes on what I should be including plus a catalog of my research in the sub folders.

How do you keep track of all your plot strands?

Within my excel spreadsheet I have a tab for plotting. I keep a table on all my plot strands and the elements/characters/settings that are linked to it.

How do you manage all the paper that writer’s accumulate? Do you file it? Toss it? Have some system for inputting what you need?

I don’t have anything on paper. All my research is on my computer (back up drive and dropbox). I may clip newspaper articles, buy books for research, but it’s minimal.

What’s up next for you as a author? (hint: can you speak a little bit about the highly anticipated Partition Junction?)

I am revising Partition Junction, which is due back to my editor soon! It’s a middle-grade adventure where 12-year-old Maya uncovers a family mystery that takes her on an adventure through Pakistan and India. I’m pretty excited about it, and it’s been a personal adventure where I’ve stretched myself quite a bit to write it.

Any parting words of advice?

You have to treat writing like a job – a job that brings tremendous joy and personal satisfaction – that’s why we do it! But as with any job, you need to be accountable to yourself to get it done.

Celebrate Fair Use Week 2015

The doctrine of fair use touches upon several of the hats that I wear: as a creator of copywritten works, as a consumer of entertainment media, as a library patron, and in my work as a web designer who is frequently charged with finding, adapting, and licensing images for client sites.

As an attorney, I’ve had clients on both sides of cease and desist letters–one who was asked to take a book off the shelf because of superficial resemblance to another work, and another whose artwork was commercialized without permission, credit, or compensation.

As an author, I’ve written parodies of pop culture into my stories. I’ve also seen my own characters borrowed by others. It’s painful to see the “children of my mind” written as bad caricatures, and painful in a different way to see them written brilliantly in situations I wish I’d thought of myself.

As a forum participant, I’ve seen people who believe, mistakenly, that the doctrine of fair use allows them to take any creative expression from any source and use it however they choose.

In short, I’ve seen fair use, up close and personal, from a variety of angles, and it’s still just a big fuzzy blob of ambiguous, conflicting, and ever-changing precedent. If you’re confused by fair use, you’re in good company. And if you’re not confused, you’re delusional.

To bring much-needed attention to this topic, February 23rd through 27th of this year has been designated as Fair Use Week, as coordinated by the Association of Research Libraries.

But to really celebrate Fair Use Week to the fullest extent, I suggest finding some bit of intellectual property that you admire the heck out of and using it. Fairly. Respectfully. Harmlessly. Cleverly. And preferably to the enjoyment and enrichment of your audience.

My contribution to Fair Use Week is a work of Star Trek fanfiction on a website called Skrawl. The thing I like about this site is that once a story starts, it belongs fully to the community. Anyone can write a chapter that they propose as a continuation, and anyone can vote on which of the submitted chapters will become part of the final community-sourced story.

Or you can celebrate the week by taking a moment to recognize the fair uses of intellectual property that you already take advantage of every day.

  • When you find yourself humming a song off the radio, that’s fair use.
  • When you take a selfie with identifiable works of architecture in the background, that’s fair use.
  • When you DVR a TV show to watch at a later time, that’s fair use.
  • When you take notes in the margins of a book, that’s fair use.
  • When you discuss the events of Super Bowl XLIX without the express written consent of the NFL, that’s fair use.
  • When you photocopy your mom’s old recipe for sweet and sour meatballs, that’s fair use.
  • When you hit the retweet button, that’s fair use.
  • And when you use your computer to display the words of a blog entry about fair use, that’s fair use too.

Without this common sense exception carved out of copyright law, we’d likely be dodging C&D letters and subpoenas all day, every day. Thanks, Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story!
