Middle-grade books aren’t just for kids. With audiobooks for long car rides, books-to-movie adaptations and apps for phones and e-readers, there are plenty of ways to get the whole family ‘plugged in’.

Turn it up!: Long road trips breeze by with middle-grade audiobooks playing on the car stereo. Even old favorites seem new-to-you when read by a great narrator.  The HARRY POTTER series by JK Rowling, read by Jim Dale, A WRINKLE IN TIME by Madeleine L’Engle, read by the author and WHEN YOU REACH ME by Rebecca Stead, read by Cynthia Holloway are all great bets.

Press play!: The whole family can enjoy comparing the differences between the book and the movie with entertaining book-to-movie adaptations like HOLES by Louis Sachar, THE TALE OF DESPEREAUX by Kate DiCamillo and NIM’S ISLAND by Wendy Orr.

Is there an app for that?: Why not download a middle-grade e-book to your electronic reader? Your middle grader can read it while waiting for the dentist or you can do the same on your next business trip or on the subway. Middle-grade books often have fast-paced plots and exciting characters, so be careful…don’t miss your stop!

Tune in, turn it on, get plugged in…to middle-grade books as a whole family.
