Interview: J.E. Thomas, Author of Control Freaks

Thomas’s hilarious and creative story about a middle school for competitive students, Control Freaks, made me laugh out loud, so I’m excited to welcome her to our blog today. Thank you for being here, J.E. We have so many questions for you. I’d like to start with when you were young.

Did you have any childhood dreams? If so, did they come true?

I did—though they came true later in life.

I wanted to be a storyteller from the time I was about four. My parents had a photo of me hunched over a table, scribbling a story with the intensity of a professional author when I was about that age.

Being an author was sidelined for a “practical” career, however. Although it took a few decades to come to fruition, I’m now fulfilling that dream quite happily.

Did you love to read as a child? If so, can you tell us some favorite books?

Reading was my favorite pastime as a child. I enjoyed it even more than television or movies, which is saying a lot!

I was that kid who would crawl under the covers, flashlight in hand, to continue reading long after bedtime.

I read and reread many of Walter Farley’s books (The Black Stallion, The Black Stallion Returns, The Black Stallion and Satan, The Island Stallion, etc.) as well as Marguerite Henry’s Misty of Chincoteague and Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty. (There was definitely a horse theme! Unfortunately, it didn’t result in my getting a horse of my own.)

I also read most, if not all, of the Beverly Cleary novels. I read Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury and Octavia Butler. And I read all of the novelizations of Star Trek, The Original Series.

What was an early experience where you learned that written language had power?

I was generally shy in class, so I loved opportunities to express myself in writing. I remember feeling such joy when one of my elementary school teachers praised something I’d written—and then asked several “what happened next” questions.

What was your biggest fear when you were young? Did you get over it?

I was terrified of vampires when I was young. Absolutely petrified. Nonetheless, I read about them and watched them on reruns of the horror soap opera, Dark Shadows.

I have not gotten over that fear! A baby bat once flew into my room while I was in England and I locked myself in the bathroom for the rest of the night!

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Ah—so many things. But perhaps the most important would be to reassure my younger self that she is enough just as she is. That no matter how many atoms are combined in myriad ways, she is the only version of her that has existed before or will exist again. And that’s incredibly special. So, cherish being unique.

Yes—absolutely! Like Doug, I knew exactly what I wanted to be from a young age and, like Doug, my parents had different dreams for me. Like Huey, I was shy and awkward, and I avoided center stage at all costs.

Like Doug and Huey—and Dr. Yee and The DOM— I formed a friendship at a young age that lasted a lifetime.

Like Travis, I was usually the youngest person in my grade. Like Padgett, I was often surrounded by people whose families were much better off financially than mine, and I would wrap myself in a different persona to deflect attention from that. Padgett presented herself as a tough kid. I was the bookworm who was always in the school library.

And, like all of the students at Benjamin Banneker College Prep, I’ve been lucky enough to have been inspired by amazing teachers, many of whom don’t realize the huge impact they have on young lives.

Can you tell everyone about meeting Nichelle Nichols, Star Trek’s original Uhura?

Of course! I’m a Star Trek fan from way back. (In fact, my first published creative work was a Star Trek story.)

I worked for the school newspaper in college and had an opportunity to cover a Star Trek convention held in downtown Denver. All of the original cast, save William Shatner, were there.

There was a media briefing in a hotel ballroom. Although I had a press pass, I couldn’t bring myself to go into the room. I was too shy, too self-conscious. I lurked by the back door.

Ms. Nichols spotted me. I can only imagine what my face looked like! Bathed in absolute terror, no doubt. She walked over and encouraged me to come in. She took my arm and drew me not just inside, but to the very front of the room.

I don’t think I managed to sputter out a single question, but it didn’t matter! The experience of being seen and being reassured that I deserved to be present, is one I will remember always.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Based on a photo my parents had of me writing what I think was my first story, I’m pretty sure I was around four.

What drew you to writing?

I’ve made up stories for as long as I can remember. But holding those stories in my head—all of the characters, all of the locations, all of the dialogue, not to mention the plot—was exhausting. It was also incredibly distracting when I was in class. I was often daydreaming about some story or another.

Being able to write my stories down was such a relief. Also, I realized that, although it’s sometimes scary to put myself out there, writing and sharing my work with others is actually a lot of fun!

Learning what others think—how they visualize characters, what makes them laugh, what they think would happen next—is an amazing experience!

What is your favorite and/or most challenging part of being a writer?

My favorite is the moment in writing when the real world falls away and I’m fully, truly, completely in the world of my imagination. I see what my characters see. I hear what they hear. I touch, feel and smell what they experience. I’m not just writing…I’m part of their lives.

Some people call that “being in the flow.” I think that’s a good description.

The most challenging part of writing is getting to that point.

I have a very active, very loud, very critical internal editor who questions everything. (“Is that the right word? I don’t think so!” “Is this good enough? I doubt it!” “Why, exactly, do you think you’re a writer?”)

I have to try all sorts of things to get into the flow. What seems to work best for me now is to write very early in the morning. Apparently, my internal editor is a late sleeper!

Have you had any careers besides writing?

I have. I worked in public relations for many, many years prior to starting a full-time writing career.

And now that we know more about J.E. Thomas, let’s find out about more about her book, Control Freaks.

Since you worked as an administrator at a school, how much of that school went into creating the school in your book, Benjamin Banneker College Prep, Colorado’s #1 school for unusually competitive students?

Lol—I’m asked that question a lot!

I now write full-time. However, when I worked as a school administrator, it was for the same school I attended from grades 9-12. That gave me an amazing opportunity to observe teachers as both a student and a colleague.

The elements of that school that are in Benjamin Banneker College Prep are an amazing campus, incredible lunches, a huge library and phenomenal, caring teachers who work incredibly hard and transform lives for the better every day.

You do a great job with the various teen voices. Did you base them on any students you know?

Thank you! And good news for students—I did not base the characters on anyone real other than me!

What inspired you to write about such an unusual competition?

I wanted to create a multi-challenge competition that gave everyone a chance to shine and that inspired the kids to learn to work together.

I also wanted to give participants an opportunity to demonstrate the difference between knowing the right answer and discovering how to put the knowledge they’ve accumulated to actual use.

Can you tell everyone what makes the competition in your book different?

Yes! Unlike competitions centered around one specific skill, like singing or athletics, the STEAMS competition involves challenges in science, technology, engineering, arts, math and sports. There are plenty of opportunities to win.

Also, not only can readers play along with the characters during various stages of the competition, but teachers and schools can replicate the challenges to have a STEAMS competition of their own. (Families can do the same as well!)

The novel has so many funny moments, do you have any tips for writing humor?

Thank you so much! I think everyone has a different technique for writing humor or telling a funny story. One thing I learned is that the step-up, or the foundation for a funny moment, may happen long before the funny moment itself occurs.

For instance, something may happen in one chapter that leads a reader to think, “This isn’t going to turn out well!” But the funny resolution may happen pages or chapters later.

Also, and this is big for me, I’ll poke fun at situations. I’ll have characters get themselves into messes that are funny to get out of. I’ll have characters say funny things without realizing that they’re funny. But I absolutely won’t make mean or cruel jokes. I don’t think they’re funny.

Did you leave anything out of this book that you wish you could have included? If so, what?

Gosh, I don’t think so. The wonderful thing about working with an editor is you go through the process of etching away words or scenes (or, gulp, even characters!) who don’t serve the story well.

That said, I did cut one character—a girl who came from a reality TV show family—who may show up in a different book one day.

Do you have any message or advice for the teachers and parents who will be sharing your book with their students and families?

I hope Control Freaks is a book that families enjoy reading together. Because there are nine points of view, family members can experiment with different voices, should they choose to read the book aloud.

What are you working on now?

My second book, The AI Incident, is slated for publication in June 2025. It follows the story of the unluckiest kid in Colorado foster care during his quest to be adopted before he turns 13. Unfortunately, his life is turned upside down when an autonomous AI system is deployed in his school.

Just for fun, here are a few random questions:

(1) What snacks do you prefer while writing?

I used to enjoy popcorn, but it leaves a horrible mess on the keyboard. Now, I steer clear of eating while I write.

(2) Do you have a favorite author from childhood?

Octavia Butler, Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury were among my favorites. I’m still a huge sci-fi fan, so I often reread these authors’ works.

(3) If you could have any pet in the world, what would you choose?

If I’m bound by the laws of nature, I’m content with dogs. If, however, I can choose among mythological pets (!), I would have a descendant of Pegasus, the winged horse. And my version would also have the ability to become invisible—and share that ability with its rider.

When do you like to write?

My favorite time to write is around 5:30 a.m. That works for me because my inner critic, who is a surly editor, sleeps late, which means I can write joyfully and quickly during that time.

That’s a great solution to the inner critic problem. I admire your dedication.

About the Author

J.E. Thomas grew up near Colorado’s Front Range mountains. She spent her summers devouring books at the local library, and her love of reading continues to inspire her writing.

J.E. is an award-winning writer with bachelor degrees in Mass Communications and Political Science, and a master’s degree in Public Communications. She began writing full-time in 2021. Prior to that, she had a long career in corporate, health care and education communications. She was also an award-winning freelance journalist, earning a Clarion Award for Article Writing from Women in Communications; a Gold Award for Feature Writing from the International Academy of Communications Arts & Sciences; a Silver Award for Writing from the Society of National Association Publications; and a Public Relations Professional of the Year Honor from the Colorado Association of Black Journalists, among others.

Control Freaks is her first book. She’s working on middle grade book #2 and her debut YA novel. Fun fact: She includes the name of at least one of her dogs in every story.

Interview with Author Patti Kim + Giveaway

I was introduced to Patti Kim’s books when we were on a panel together at the ALA Summer conference in 2018 and immediately fell in love. From just reading the opening paragraphs of her debut middle-grade novel, I’M OK, I knew I’d love the book and I was right. Patti blends laugh out loud humor with such deep heart. So when I heard Patti had a new MG novel out, I wanted to know more about it.

Born in Busan, South Korea, Patti Kim immigrated to the United States on Christmas Day, 1974. Convinced at the age of five that she was a writer, she scribbled gibberish all over the pages of her mother’s Korean-English dictionary and got in big trouble for it. But that didn’t stop her from writing. She is the author of A CAB CALLED RELIABLE, HERE I AM, I’M OK, an APALA Literary Honor Book, and IT’S GIRLS LIKE YOU, MICKEY. Patti lives in University Park, Maryland with her husband, two daughters, and a ferocious terrier.

Patti, welcome to From The Mixed Up Files. Thank you for being here. Tell us about your new middle-grade novel, IT’S GIRLS LIKE YOU, MICKEY.

IT’S GIRLS LIKE YOU, MICKEY is about Mickey McDonald first seen in my previous book, I’M OK as Ok Lee’s unforgettable friend. Bursting with personality, she urged me to take a deeper look into her life and character. This book begins with the first day of 7th grade, and the bold Mickey we know is not feeling so great. Ok has moved. Her dad has left. Back-to-school shopping didn’t happen. Her mom is in a mood. With such a precarious home life, Mickey is all nerves and not so sure about herself. And turning 13 is no stroll in the park. What she really wants is a best friend, and she finds one in the new girl, Sun Joo. The two girls truly hit it off, but other forces soon interject, leaving Mickey with first major friend breakup.

It's Girls Like You. Mickey by Patti KimThis is a companion book to your debut MG novel, I’M OK. Tell us about that book too and how the books are connected.

The two books are connected by Mickey and Ok’s friendship. In I’M OK, Mickey forces a friendship with Ok which ends up playing a pivotal part in helping Ok open up about the death of his father as well as helping his mother find him when he runs away. She becomes his first real friend.

What made you want to write this companion book following Mickey’s character instead of a sequel with Ok?

Mickey loves the spotlight. It truly felt like she wanted her story to be told. So many intriguing details about Mickey’s life kept emerging in Ok’s book like her many animals, her little brother, her irritable mother, her often absent truck-driving father, her past pageant life, and the sheer force of her positivity. Her need and love for attention called to me.

What were the biggest challenges to writing this second book in the same world?

The biggest challenge was keeping echoes of Ok in Mickey’s story without him taking center stage. I had him move out of the neighborhood which made perfect sense since his mother remarried. I kept them connected as pen pals through postcards and letters. This ended up working quite well since the writing process plays a significant part in Mickey developing an introspective and reflective voice. It’s challenging to strike that balance of keeping a previous protagonist in the picture in a meaningful way, while not diverting the story. I also wanted to see these kids do all right without each other. So much of growing up is being able to say goodbye.

I'm Ok by Patti KimWhat are some things that surprised you about writing IT’S GIRLS LIKE YOU, MICKEY, compared to writing I’M OK?

It was surprising how much I actually enjoyed the revision process. This is a big deal because I used to absolutely hate revising. After my first draft returned with my editor’s notes, I couldn’t wait to get back into that world and revise. The sensation felt like a blurry image gradually coming into focus. It was incredibly fun.

You write about some issues that haven’t been in MG novels for a while, like dealing with getting a period. Why do think it’s important to have characters going through these issues in MG novels?

Yes, the period scene. If these taboo topics aren’t covered in books, then where? Getting my period was shrouded in secrecy and shame, and that attitude informed the relationship I ended up having with my body. No body confidence whatsoever for me at that age. I really wanted Mickey to be Mickey about her period and to be an inspiration and encouragement, demonstrating a more positive narrative around getting your period. I couldn’t imagine writing a book about a girl, especially a girl like Mickey, turning 13 without making a big deal about it. Come on, we’re talking about Mickey.

I love the title, even if it does have me singing for the rest of the day. What gave you the idea of naming the book after an ‘80s song?

Since the original song is about a guy who breaks hearts, don’t you just love the idea of re-purposing the title to elevate a girl? And it’s so catchy. I couldn’t resist.

Agreed! What can we look forward to next from you?

I’ve been thinking a lot about Sun Joo Moon. I think she’s asking for stage time. Unlike Mickey, she’s quiet about it, but there’s a real depth to her that feels worth exploring.

Writing and Illustrating Funny Poetry For Kids – Author Interview with Vikram Madan, and Giveaway

At Mixed-Up Files today, we’re thrilled to have author-illustrator Vikram Madan. Vikram talks about his new book A Hatful Of Dragons that comes out on April 21, 2020. He also shares his exciting publishing journey along with other writing tips.

                                                           

 

  1. Tell us about A Hatful Of Dragons. What inspired you to write the book?

A Hatful of Dragons: And More Than 13.8 Billion Other Funny Poems’ is a quirky, eclectic collection of funny rhyming poems woven together with rich illustrations featuring recurring characters and sub-plots – a double dose of visual and literary fun for all ages 7 and up.

As a kid I loved both cartooning and writing poems but never thought of combining the two till I encountered, much later in life, Shel Silverstein’s work. I was instantly attracted to the concept of words and images working together to create a funnier experience. So much so that ‘A Hatful of Dragon’ is my third collection of self-illustrated funny poems featuring intertwined words and drawings.

 

  1. What would you want readers to take away from A Hatful Of Dragons?

I would love for readers of all ages to come away from this book with the idea that you can have a lot of fun playing with language and also with a desire to read more rhyming poetry.

 

  1. What were some of the most fun and challenging parts about writing A Hatful Of Dragons?

The poems in my original manuscript were largely disconnected from each other. While shortlisting the poems, Rebecca Davis, my editor, instinctively zeroed-in on the uniqueness of creating cross-connections between poems. As I developed the illustrations for the book, I had a lot of fun thinking of ways to interconnect the poems visually. For example, a main character in one visual might show up later in the book as a secondary character in another visual, helping create a cohesive, but weird, universe for the characters. I hope kids will have fun closely inspecting the illustrations for cross-connections.

The most challenging part of the book was stuffing 13.8 billion poems into 64 pages. 🙂

Actually I found doing the illustrations to be a challenge as I underestimated the sheer physical work required to get through multiple rounds of revisions and changes. Somewhat like running a marathon, most enjoyable, not while you’re doing it, but well after it is done. 🙂

 

 

Another challenge was coming up with a distinctive title for the book. The title poem ‘A Hatful of Dragons’ did not exist in my original manuscript. We thought of titling the book ‘There’s a Dragon in My Wagon’ but an internet search showed half-a-dozen books already had that title. Many other title poems from the manuscript did not pass internal sales and marketing reviews. I finally proposed ‘A Hatful of Dragons’ and once that title was approved, I had to then write a title poem from scratch worthy of the book. Talk about pressure! 🙂

 

  1. You began your writing career by self-publishing your work. How did the experience influence you as a children’s writer? How did you make the transition from self-publishing to traditional publishing?

Prior to self-publishing, I spent a decade trying to have my rhyming picture books and themed poetry collections published. I found agents and publishers reluctant to consider poetry. With rejections piling up, I actually gave up writing and submitting for a few years. However the itch never went away. In 2012, I spent a summer writing a fresh collection of poems. I decided then that if no one would publish my poems, I would publish them myself, which led to my first collection ‘The Bubble Collector’.

 

Once ‘The Bubble Collector’ was out, I realized writing the book was the easy part. Marketing, distribution, getting anyone to notice a self-published book, was incredibly hard (more so for us introverts!). I learnt that if I didn’t do the hustle, no one else would. With perseverance and leg work, I was able to get the book into local bookstores, gain a few favorable reviews and endorsements, and conduct some school visits. The book went on to win a 2013 Moonbeam Book Award for Children’s Poetry and was invited to apply to the 2014 WA State Book Awards. All in all, for a self-published poetry book, it did quite ok. The ‘hustling’, however, left me with deep appreciation for traditional publishing.

Upon completing the manuscript for my second collection (in 2015), I decided to give the traditional channel another shot. It took a year of querying agents before one, Rosemary Stimola at Stimola Literary Studios, expressed interest in the manuscript. (The modest success with the self-published book really helped my pitch). It took Rosemary another year to find a publisher, Boyds Mills & Kane. The publisher scheduled the book for a 2020 release, five years from when I finished the manuscript. Despite the slow pace of traditional publishing, I’ve really enjoyed working with my editors, Rebecca Davis and Barbara Grzeslo – the book is so much better than I could have made just by myself – and I’m looking forward to it being available everywhere without having to knock on doors, one at a time. 🙂

And since the second book was going to take five years, I squeezed out another self-published poetry collection, ‘Lord of the Bubbles’, in 2018, which went on to win a 2019 Moonbeam Award for Children’s Poetry.

 

 

  1. If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

Although I was writing and drawing from a really early age, I didn’t take my art seriously because I couldn’t see how to traverse the gap between what I made and what I admired. With no insight into the creative journey, the learning process, the blood, sweat, and tears that every piece of art demands, I did not believe in my own abilities. My epiphany came when one day, as an adult, I accidently wandered into an exhibition of original Dr. Seuss manuscripts. Typewritten sheets covered with frustrated scribbles, crossed out over and over again in search of better options. I was stunned to realize that the ‘genius’ was in the incessant revision, the twenty attempts before something worked, the trying, trying, trying and not giving up. Looking at those manuscripts was the first time I thought to myself, “Wait, if this is how it’s done, then maybe I can do this too!” Thank you Dr. Seuss – I wish I could have sent my younger self to see that!

 

  1. Do you have any other advice/tips for writers?

In visual-art circles the running joke is that ‘Only the first fifty years are the hardest’. In other words, the ‘successful’ artists are the ones who find ways to persist. The same is true for writers. Patience, persistence, working on your craft, and never giving up! (And if you do feel like giving up, read a book, any book, by creative coach Eric Maisel).
