Interview with author Shifa Saltagi Safadi on her book Kareem Between

Welcome to Mixed-Up Files Contributer Shifa Safadi!

It is my extreme pleasure to interview Shifa Safadi for the blog today. Shifa is a regular contributer to the blog. Her sunny-bright disposition and optimistic attitude are infectious. She exhibits a continual commitment to her culture, her community, and children. I couldn’t have asked for a better partner on this journey to highlight fiction for middle graders by diverse authors, and I am honored to talk to her about her new release KAREEM BETWEEN!

All about Shifa

Shifa started off in the kidlit book space as a Muslim Book Reviewer. As a new mother, she wanted her kids to be proud of their Arab American and Muslim identity. She believed that books were the best way to connect with them at bedtime and help them feel seen.

All the beautiful books she collected and adored wok eup her childhood dream of writing books. After a little soul-searching and a lot of hard woork, here she is, writing her own books for young children, seeing her dreams come true, and loving every minute of it!

Oh my gosh, I love every single review I have seen of KAREEM BETWEEN. I am so so flattered to have my words read and loved. I have been getting a lot of positive reviews and reactions, and a memorable moment was getting a Kirkus star! I jumped up and down like a kid again!

And also, I love when readers appreciate the football! I want kids who love sports to just adore the football aspects and geek out at all the references and NFL facts.

What is your biggest motivator?

 

Writing for Muslim kids is my biggest motivation as a writer. Growing up as a Muslim American, I honestly felt so out of place for so long. I wondered how to find my place in my world, and it made me doubt if I would ever belong. Add rising islamophobia into it, a Muslim ban in 2017, and prevalent stereotypes- I feel even more impassioned to provide books for Muslim kids to see themselves in, and books that provide a window for all readers to peek into what it’s like to be a Muslim kid.

How do you hope your work can impact the Muslim community? How do you hope your work can impact perceptions of Muslims?

 Words are so powerful.

I know for myself, the first time I ever read a Muslim book, I was an adult. I remember crying- like I could not believe that I was seeing a main character who was a Muslim who was NOT A VILLAIN. Unfortunately, popular media for so long has shown Muslims and Arabs as terrorists and inhumane and oppressed, that to see them shown as normal humans for me was so unexpected.

I want it to be expected.

A diverse group of children on a white ...I want it to be the norm.

I want young readers now to grow up normalizing that Muslims and Arabs are human- that they have stories and voices and words worth listening to. And I want Muslim readers to feel seen and worthy, knowing that they matter.

For readers who aren’t Muslim or Arab, I want them to really examine the inner stereotypes that society has popularized about us. Do hijabi women seem oppressed? Do Arabs seem uneducated? Do Muslim men with beards scare people? Do we all live in deserts?

The answer is no, obviously, because generalizations and boxes are wrong.

Need Diversity in Children's Literature ...

I want stereotypes challenged.

I want people to re-examine their own inner implicit biases and challenge their own selves to think beyond the boxes. And to meet my characters and realize that Muslims and Arabs have stories and lives and emotions and lived experiences that are similar and relatable to ANY reader.

 

Writing from the Heart

Do you try to be original or to deliver tried and true stories?

How to Write a Great Story in 5 Steps | GrammarlyI write from my heart- and because of that, I always have to dig deep into a part of myself to bring stories to life. There’s a piece of me in each book I make- and even though fiction is not true, there is an element of truth in the stories I tell. These are stories that feel real because they CAN be real. And I want that to be inspiring to readers by making them feel completely immersed in the story.

One of my biggest author inspirations is S. K. Ali.

That Muslim book I read as an adult? It was by her. I love how she writes such beautiful Muslim stories and devotes her time to making sure they feel loved by the Muslim community.
I hope my stories are received well too!

 

 

As an author, what would you choose as a mascot/avatar?

I would probably choose a football for this book KAREEM BETWEEN.

But as a whole, with all my books, maybe a mosaic heart box. I pour Islamic representation into my books and I love Islamic art- and of course mosaic is so reminiscent of Islamic architecture in my birth country, Syria.

Interview: J.E. Thomas, Author of Control Freaks

JE Thomas author photoJ.E. Thomas’s hilarious and creative story about a middle school for competitive students, Control Freaks, made me laugh out loud, so I’m excited to welcome her to our blog today. Thank you for being here, J.E. We have so many questions for you. I’d like to start with when you were young.

Did you have any childhood dreams? If so, did they come true?

I did—though they came true later in life.

I wanted to be a storyteller from the time I was about four. My parents had a photo of me hunched over a table, scribbling a story with the intensity of a professional author when I was about that age.

Being an author was sidelined for a “practical” career, however. Although it took a few decades to come to fruition, I’m now fulfilling that dream quite happily.

Did you love to read as a child? If so, can you tell us some favorite books?

Reading was my favorite pastime as a child. I enjoyed it even more than television or movies, which is saying a lot!

I was that kid who would crawl under the covers, flashlight in hand, to continue reading long after bedtime.

I read and reread many of Walter Farley’s books (The Black Stallion, The Black Stallion Returns, The Black Stallion and Satan, The Island Stallion, etc.) as well as Marguerite Henry’s Misty of Chincoteague and Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty. (There was definitely a horse theme! Unfortunately, it didn’t result in my getting a horse of my own.)

I also read most, if not all, of the Beverly Cleary novels. I read Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury and Octavia Butler. And I read all of the novelizations of Star Trek, The Original Series.

What was an early experience where you learned that written language had power?

I was generally shy in class, so I loved opportunities to express myself in writing. I remember feeling such joy when one of my elementary school teachers praised something I’d written—and then asked several “what happened next” questions.

What was your biggest fear when you were young? Did you get over it?

I was terrified of vampires when I was young. Absolutely petrified. Nonetheless, I read about them and watched them on reruns of the horror soap opera, Dark Shadows.

I have not gotten over that fear! A baby bat once flew into my room while I was in England and I locked myself in the bathroom for the rest of the night!

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Ah—so many things. But perhaps the most important would be to reassure my younger self that she is enough just as she is. That no matter how many atoms are combined in myriad ways, she is the only version of her that has existed before or will exist again. And that’s incredibly special. So, cherish being unique.

Is your past woven into the story? If so, how?novel cover - Control Freaks

Yes—absolutely! Like Doug, I knew exactly what I wanted to be from a young age and, like Doug, my parents had different dreams for me. Like Huey, I was shy and awkward, and I avoided center stage at all costs.

Like Doug and Huey—and Dr. Yee and The DOM— I formed a friendship at a young age that lasted a lifetime.

Like Travis, I was usually the youngest person in my grade. Like Padgett, I was often surrounded by people whose families were much better off financially than mine, and I would wrap myself in a different persona to deflect attention from that. Padgett presented herself as a tough kid. I was the bookworm who was always in the school library.

And, like all of the students at Benjamin Banneker College Prep, I’ve been lucky enough to have been inspired by amazing teachers, many of whom don’t realize the huge impact they have on young lives.

Can you tell everyone about meeting Nichelle Nichols, Star Trek’s original Uhura?

Of course! I’m a Star Trek fan from way back. (In fact, my first published creative work was a Star Trek story.)

I worked for the school newspaper in college and had an opportunity to cover a Star Trek convention held in downtown Denver. All of the original cast, save William Shatner, were there.

There was a media briefing in a hotel ballroom. Although I had a press pass, I couldn’t bring myself to go into the room. I was too shy, too self-conscious. I lurked by the back door.

Ms. Nichols spotted me. I can only imagine what my face looked like! Bathed in absolute terror, no doubt. She walked over and encouraged me to come in. She took my arm and drew me not just inside, but to the very front of the room.

I don’t think I managed to sputter out a single question, but it didn’t matter! The experience of being seen and being reassured that I deserved to be present, is one I will remember always.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Based on a photo my parents had of me writing what I think was my first story, I’m pretty sure I was around four.

What drew you to writing?

I’ve made up stories for as long as I can remember. But holding those stories in my head—all of the characters, all of the locations, all of the dialogue, not to mention the plot—was exhausting. It was also incredibly distracting when I was in class. I was often daydreaming about some story or another.

Being able to write my stories down was such a relief. Also, I realized that, although it’s sometimes scary to put myself out there, writing and sharing my work with others is actually a lot of fun!

Learning what others think—how they visualize characters, what makes them laugh, what they think would happen next—is an amazing experience!

What is your favorite and/or most challenging part of being a writer?

My favorite is the moment in writing when the real world falls away and I’m fully, truly, completely in the world of my imagination. I see what my characters see. I hear what they hear. I touch, feel and smell what they experience. I’m not just writing…I’m part of their lives.

Some people call that “being in the flow.” I think that’s a good description.

The most challenging part of writing is getting to that point.

I have a very active, very loud, very critical internal editor who questions everything. (“Is that the right word? I don’t think so!” “Is this good enough? I doubt it!” “Why, exactly, do you think you’re a writer?”)

I have to try all sorts of things to get into the flow. What seems to work best for me now is to write very early in the morning. Apparently, my internal editor is a late sleeper!

Have you had any careers besides writing?

I have. I worked in public relations for many, many years prior to starting a full-time writing career.

And now that we know more about J.E. Thomas, let’s find out about more about her book, Control Freaks.

Since you worked as an administrator at a school, how much of that school went into creating the school in your book, Benjamin Banneker College Prep, Colorado’s #1 school for unusually competitive students?

Lol—I’m asked that question a lot!

I now write full-time. However, when I worked as a school administrator, it was for the same school I attended from grades 9-12. That gave me an amazing opportunity to observe teachers as both a student and a colleague.

The elements of that school that are in Benjamin Banneker College Prep are an amazing campus, incredible lunches, a huge library and phenomenal, caring teachers who work incredibly hard and transform lives for the better every day.

You do a great job with the various teen voices. Did you base them on any students you know?

Thank you! And good news for students—I did not base the characters on anyone real other than me!

What inspired you to write about such an unusual competition?

I wanted to create a multi-challenge competition that gave everyone a chance to shine and that inspired the kids to learn to work together.

I also wanted to give participants an opportunity to demonstrate the difference between knowing the right answer and discovering how to put the knowledge they’ve accumulated to actual use.

Can you tell everyone what makes the competition in your book different?

Yes! Unlike competitions centered around one specific skill, like singing or athletics, the STEAMS competition involves challenges in science, technology, engineering, arts, math and sports. There are plenty of opportunities to win.

Also, not only can readers play along with the characters during various stages of the competition, but teachers and schools can replicate the challenges to have a STEAMS competition of their own. (Families can do the same as well!)

The novel has so many funny moments, do you have any tips for writing humor?

Thank you so much! I think everyone has a different technique for writing humor or telling a funny story. One thing I learned is that the step-up, or the foundation for a funny moment, may happen long before the funny moment itself occurs.

For instance, something may happen in one chapter that leads a reader to think, “This isn’t going to turn out well!” But the funny resolution may happen pages or chapters later.

Also, and this is big for me, I’ll poke fun at situations. I’ll have characters get themselves into messes that are funny to get out of. I’ll have characters say funny things without realizing that they’re funny. But I absolutely won’t make mean or cruel jokes. I don’t think they’re funny.

Did you leave anything out of this book that you wish you could have included? If so, what?

Gosh, I don’t think so. The wonderful thing about working with an editor is you go through the process of etching away words or scenes (or, gulp, even characters!) who don’t serve the story well.

That said, I did cut one character—a girl who came from a reality TV show family—who may show up in a different book one day.

Do you have any message or advice for the teachers and parents who will be sharing your book with their students and families?

I hope Control Freaks is a book that families enjoy reading together. Because there are nine points of view, family members can experiment with different voices, should they choose to read the book aloud.

What are you working on now?

My second book, The AI Incident, is slated for publication in June 2025. It follows the story of the unluckiest kid in Colorado foster care during his quest to be adopted before he turns 13. Unfortunately, his life is turned upside down when an autonomous AI system is deployed in his school.

Just for fun, here are a few random questions:

(1) What snacks do you prefer while writing?

I used to enjoy popcorn, but it leaves a horrible mess on the keyboard. Now, I steer clear of eating while I write.

(2) Do you have a favorite author from childhood?

Octavia Butler, Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury were among my favorites. I’m still a huge sci-fi fan, so I often reread these authors’ works.

(3) If you could have any pet in the world, what would you choose?

If I’m bound by the laws of nature, I’m content with dogs. If, however, I can choose among mythological pets (!), I would have a descendant of Pegasus, the winged horse. And my version would also have the ability to become invisible—and share that ability with its rider.

When do you like to write?

My favorite time to write is around 5:30 a.m. That works for me because my inner critic, who is a surly editor, sleeps late, which means I can write joyfully and quickly during that time.

That’s a great solution to the inner critic problem. I admire your dedication.

The minute Principal Yee announces an epic competition for the golden B-B trophy, seventh-grader Frederick Douglass Zezzmer knows he has to win. But it won’t be easy. About the Author

J.E. Thomas grew up near Colorado’s Front Range mountains. She spent her summers devouring books at the local library, and her love of reading continues to inspire her writing.

J.E. is an award-winning writer with bachelor degrees in Mass Communications and Political Science, and a master’s degree in Public Communications. She began writing full-time in 2021. Prior to that, she had a long career in corporate, health care and education communications. She was also an award-winning freelance journalist, earning a Clarion Award for Article Writing from Women in Communications; a Gold Award for Feature Writing from the International Academy of Communications Arts & Sciences; a Silver Award for Writing from the Society of National Association Publications; and a Public Relations Professional of the Year Honor from the Colorado Association of Black Journalists, among others.

Interview With Author Carly Anne West

I’m thrilled to welcome Carly to discuss her new book, THE GHOSTS OF NAMELESS ISLAND (Andrews McMeel Kids 7/23/24). I recently met Carly at ALA and fell in love with her and her hilarious/spine-tingling middle-grade novel.

I am delighted to say we share the same publisher, and our ghost stories release on the same day, which makes me feel even more of a kinship with her. (HART & SOULS)

So . . . If you’re in the mood for a spooky summer, we’ve got you covered!

Now it’s my pleasure to introduce you to the fabulous Carly Anne West . . .

Lisa: Tell us about THE GHOSTS OF NAMELESS ISLAND 

Carly: GHOSTS follows Gus Greenburg, a kid with an unlikely (and unwelcome) gift—he can see ghosts. While this didn’t used to be the biggest deal in the world, it’s become a bigger deal now that Gus and his mom have moved to Nameless Island and into the infamous Rotham Manor, an old mansion replete with ghosts ready to haunt the heck out of Gus. And these ghosts play by a different set of rules than the others; they can hurt Gus. Now, Gus must find out what happened to the ghosts and discover their identities before they can pass on to the next realm and leave him alone. Fortunately, he’ll have some help ghostbusting with his new friends, Tavi and Miles.

Lisa: How did you come up with the idea? 

Carly: I’ve always felt that the most potent hauntings come from unfinished business, and Gus is dealing with a great deal of unfinished business with a missing father in his life, so it made sense to me that he would be parsing out mysteries about people whose lives ended perhaps before they expected them to, and I really liked the idea of a kid who was dealing with his own anxieties helping ghosts that were experiencing their own sort of turmoil. And it takes place in the Pacific Northwest; having lived there, I know it’s an area rife with haunted stories.

Lisa: Did you base characters on people you know? If yes, spill the beans!

Carly: I mean, don’t all writers create their characters out of composites of people they’ve known in their lives?  No one character is anyone specific, but there are certainly aspects of the characters that have special qualities similar to important people in my life. We’ll find in the second book that Gus is an artist; so is one of my kids. We’ll find out later Tavi is a soccer player like my other kiddo. Miles is Korean-American; I live in Korea. So there are elements of real-life in there, absolutely.

Lisa: How much of your real-life experiences play a role in the stories you tell?

Carly: Honestly, I think I write for middle grade and young adults because those times in my life (and so many people’s lives) were/are so difficult. It’s maybe a bit cathartic to write about a time when I felt so out of control; maybe controlling the narrative now is one way to take back some of the power I felt unable to possess back then. There are also plenty of emotions from that time period that cling to adulthood (frustratingly), so in a way, what I’m writing can feel timely, whether I want it to or not.

Lisa: Which books did you like to read when you were a kid? Do those books influence your writing?

Carly: I was a little late to the reading game. I was good at reading the required books, but when it came to reading for pleasure, I had a tough time finding what my niche was. I knew I liked scary stories, but once I’d burned through all the Christopher Pike options, I was stuck. I probably started reading Stephen King too young. Once I started down that road, I knew horror was my thing, and that absolutely influenced my writing. I knew I was attracted to scary stories, and the scarier the better. There was something delicious about the anticipation of a supernatural scare, that lingering suspense. Fear is such an ancient, lizard-brain sort of emotion. I love playing with notions that creaky and dormant.

Lisa: What advice would you give twelve-year-old, Carly?

Carly: Oh dear. That poor girl. She struggled. A lot. Twelve years old was not a good age. I would tell her that she is most definitely not the only one feeling the anxiety she is feeling, and that emotion isn’t alien but an actual clinical function she’ll be taught to deal with down the road. Same with the panic attacks. I’d tell her that the people who seem super important in this moment won’t mean so much in a year or two, and in fact, she won’t even remember their names. I’d tell her that her body is beautiful the way it is. I’d tell her she’s so much stronger than she thinks she is. She’ll be okay.

Lisa: Have you ever seen a ghost?

I’ve heard a ghost. It murmured in my right ear. I was unpacking books in our new apartment in Alameda, CA late one night. My husband was asleep in the bedroom, and all at once, all the sound emptied from the room, like a vacuum sucked every drop of air from the atmosphere. Then, I heard a very close murmuring against my ear. I whipped around thinking it was my husband sneaking up on me, but no one was there, and when I ran down the hall to catch him in the act, he was dead asleep. When I returned to the living room, the sound was back, the murmuring was gone, and all had returned to normal. The next morning, my husband was putting books away in the same spot, and he yells “What?” to me. I come around the corner, and he’s like, “you were mumbling, I couldn’t hear you.” He heard the same thing I heard, in the same spot. The murmurings happened right next to a closet in the living room. The entire time we lived in that apartment, our cats would never go in that closet. They would get close, then freeze, stare into an upper corner of the closet, lay their ears back, slowly slink away, and dart around the corner.

Lisa: If you could talk to a ghost, what would you say?

Carly: Well, to the one in Alameda, I said, “You were here first, so the place is yours. Please just let us stay in peace. I think we can live here together.” And we did for three years with almost no other incidents. Just a couple of spooky moments.

Lisa: I know you are a plotter . . . How do you outline an entire story? What is your secret? (asking for a friend)

Carly: So, I should probably qualify this. I’m a plotter, but only to an extent. I don’t start off that way. I typically start with an emotion, something I know I want my main character to be going through. From there, I often pick a setting, as the setting usually becomes something of a character in the story. Then I’ll just sort of see what sprouts with that emotion and that setting. I only really start plotting once I’m about a third of the way through writing scenes. That’s when I realize I need to start building out a sort of scaffolding to hold the story together. I’ll break out a giant sketchbook and make either a timeline or a scene-by-scene summary, but even then, there are holes and scribbles and a million and one changes. I rarely if ever write in sequence, and I almost never know how a story is going to end. My characters almost always surprise me.

Lisa: Last, but most important . . . What happens next with Gus?

Carly: HA! He’s going to surprise me, too! But I at least know where he’s headed in Book 2. You can expect more ghosts than you bargained for in the first book, some friend drama that Gus didn’t sign up for, noxious dogs, therapy speed-dating, intrepid librarians, bootlegging, Cat-wrangling, and so much more.

Lisa: Thank you so much for chatting with me today. I’ve got goosebumps from your ghost story. So creepy! I once lived with a ghost that occasionally turned all the lights on in my house after I went to bed. I just assumed she didn’t like the dark.
