When the Hammer Builds the House: Grappling with AI in Kidlit

Two years ago I wrote an article about how to utilize AI as a tool in children’s writing. At the time, ChatGPT was still in its first iterations, and many creatives had only the faintest ideas about generative AI. In the middle grade world, authors were mostly just trying to figure out what AI would mean for them, if anything at all. 

I think it’s safe to say things have changed since then, and I wanted to come back to this topic with fresh eyes to see if the undertones of techno-optimism that permeated my first piece on the subject still resonate the way they did back in 2023. There are, after all, some new realities that authors must face head-on.

For one, it’s simply no longer accurate to say that AI writing is cheesy, formulaic, and easy to spot. Large language models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini have become astonishingly good at mimicking human authors in tone, humor, and even complex themes woven through longer pieces. YouTuber and developmental editor Alyssa Matesic recently did a side-by-side of AI writing and short stories written by professional authors, and the two were startlingly difficult to tell apart.

That also begs the question of how AI models have gotten so good. Since 2023, big tech companies have scraped vast libraries of unlicensed and copyrighted material to train their models. It’s a controversial topic, and too intricate to dive into here, but it has forced many authors to divert attention away from the creative process and think carefully about how to protect their work.

Still, the biggest issue probably isn’t about detectability or fair use, but the mere fact that AI writing exists at all. The very possibility of humanlike AI writing has cast a shadow over the legitimate efforts of human writers everywhere. Even the once-loved em dash has become a symbol of AI skepticism, with many authors consciously adjusting their tone and techniques to look less like the AI that used their writing to develop its own voice in the first place. It’s a strangely ironic dance that creators across all fields have been doing since generative AI exploded onto the scene in the last few years. 

So is it really fair to say that AI is “just a tool” the way I described it back in 2023? It would be a bit like a master craftsman returning to his worksite after a lunch break to find that his hammer had come to life and built the rest of the house without him. It sounds nice, but what if the craftsman actually enjoyed building houses? What if he’d spent his whole life learning to do it well? What if everyone then assumed that all his houses – countless hours of work – had been built by the magic hammer? 

So what is a middle grade author to do in this strange new world? Since this post is just around the corner from Thanksgiving, I’m choosing to slant toward gratitude. Even in this weird and sometimes scary landscape of publishing in 2025, there are quite a few things to be thankful for.

 

Authors are fighting back and winning.

A U.S. federal judge gave preliminary approval to a $1.5 billion settlement between Anthropic PBC and authors who alleged nearly half a million books were pirated to train AI chatbots. It’s a major win for writers wanting more accountability from AI developers.

Readers want human-made books.

As AI writing continues to permeate the book market, consumers are becoming more vocal about their preference for human work. In a recent poll by YouGov, well over half of respondents reported that they’d feel less fulfilled after learning a book they’d read was authored with AI. There are also new projects popping up like the “Human Authored” initiative from the Authors Guild. It’s a promising sign that readers are rediscovering the incredible value of human connection and contribution.

 

As a tool, AI is only getting better.

In its rightful place, AI continues to be a transformative technology that can untether creators and allow them to make and explore more than ever before. As a research tool, for example, AI cites its sources with more accuracy than it did back in 2023, and it can also summarize and synthesize material extraordinarily well. Even for this piece, which is admittedly a bit skeptical of AI’s prevalence overall, I used AI tools to find sources and make connections. I just had to keep that hammer locked up in the toolbox when it came time to write, design the art, etc. Many have equated this dynamic with letting AI “do the dishes”. Artificial Intelligence can handle the chores so creatives can do the fun stuff (although not all the time, as we learned from NEO — skip to 2:55 for a good laugh).

 

So have I changed my mind about AI over the last two years? Should you? These are questions worth exploring, but let’s not spend too much time perseverating on a dynamic that changes almost daily. 

After all, we’ve got writing to do.

AI as a Tool in Children’s Writing

In this blog post, we delve into the intriguing realm of AI-powered children’s book writing, exploring its impact, possibilities, and the enchanting stories emerging from this innovative collaboration.

Okay…now here’s the part where I do the thing all those news anchors do when they’re being cute: That entire opening was written by ChatGPT with the prompt, “write me a one-paragraph introduction to a blog post about using artificial intelligence in children’s book writing”.

Now, I know you probably  want to go back and read it again. Go ahead…I’ll wait.

Artificial intelligence is the sort of thing that drives people to extreme perspectives, especially when you apply it to a specific context like kidlit. I’ve read plenty of articles warning that AI will be the downfall of all creativity, and to be fair, I’ve come across more than a few YouTube channels devoted entirely to generating picture books using AI with what seems to be the sole purpose of flooding the market and turning a profit.

But the thing is, AI is a tool. You can use tools for all sorts of things, both good and bad. My toddler demonstrates this regularly when he whomps his brothers with the play hammer on his workbench. 

In this post, I’m choosing to highlight AI as a tool for good. We won’t delve into all of the implications for children’s publishing (my friend Susan did a great job with this a few months ago in her post, “What Does AI Mean for Middle Grade?”). The reality is that there will always be people out there who use the hammer for whomping. 

So how does AI support true creativity and help middle grade authors craft awesome stories? Here are three things I’m really excited about:

VISION BOARDS

A lot of authors conceptualize elements of their stories by using vision boards. They’ll collect clippings from magazines, search clip art databases, and even draw illustrations themselves. The idea is that a visual reference can help kickstart the creative drive and supplement the process of generating new ideas. Artificial intelligence is really great for this! Specifically, we’re talking here about generative AI (like DALL-E). AI image-generating engines can give a real boost to writers in a creative slump. For example, if you’re trying to envision a scene but having trouble nailing down the descriptive language, you could use a simple prompt such as “murky swamp” and get a whole collection of AI – generated images that could serve as reference points for drawing the scene.

This works really well for characters, too. For one of my books a few years ago, I used an avatar creator to construct my main characters ahead of time. I’ve always struggled to describe physical attributes of characters in my stories, and I thought it might help to have pictures of them tacked all around my writing desk. It took me a few hours, but it was worth it to help me flesh out physical details. Now, that same process would take only a few minutes using prompts in a program like dream.

SEAMLESS RESEARCH

Research is foundational to most creative works, even works of fiction. I was working on a spooky middle grade a few years ago and probably spent hundreds of hours researching paranormal investigators, types of ghosts, haunted locations, etc. A lot of that process involved sorting through websites and combing for specific information that related to my story. Artificial intelligence can do this much more quickly and efficiently. Google’s chatbot, Bard, can organize Google’s extensive database of information into a neatly packaged summary that feels like it was written just for you (because it was!). Of course, for non-fiction writers who rely heavily on accurate information, additional fact-checking will be required, but it’s still hard to argue with the ease of having a personal research assistant at your beck and call. Bard even arranges things in bullet points. I love bullet points!

BOOK COMPS

When I was querying agents a few years ago, one of the things I struggled with was coming up with appropriate comparisons between my books and previously published works. Book comps are an important aspect of pitching a book, and while there is much debate about the value of referencing your creative works in relation to similar titles, it is a reality of the publishing world. That said, the process of sifting through thousands of other titles (many of which a reasonable person could never hope to have read) is extraordinarily time consuming. By now you probably know where I’m going with this. AI can do it for you! Just check out this example from ChatGPT in the screenshot below. I asked for comp titles for my latest middle grade book (which goes out on submission this January!). If I were pitching my work to an agent or editor, this list could be really helpful. Bonus… This is a great way to discover some wonderful new writing!

I hope you found this admittedly brief list thought-provoking. Of course, the lingering question remains… is AI going to completely upend children’s publishing? Personally, I don’t think so, and neither does AI. I mean, obviously I asked, and ChatGPT’s response is a fitting way to wrap up this post:

“…the essence of storytelling and the emotional connection fostered by children’s books are unlikely to be diminished. Instead, AI may complement human creativity and expand the possibilities for engaging young readers.”

Christine Taylor-Butler: Darcy, you’ve been in the business for quite a while and you’ve written everything from science fiction and fantasy to contemporary stories and science. When did you know you wanted to become a writer? Were there detours along the way?

Darcy Pattison: I have always been a reader! In sixth grade, I read THE LORD OF THE RINGS (the Harry Potter of my day), and even then, I thought about being on the flip side of the story. I wanted to write stories that people love to read. But I also grew up questioning everything so science writing is a natural fit for me, too.

CTB: You’ve been published by a number of trade publishers. What lead you to create Mims House?

Darcy: In the last twenty years, publishing has changed because of technology. The introduction of ebooks and print-on-demand services means that publishing a book is a low-cost investment up-front. It meant I could publish the books that I was passionate about and bring them to market myself. I had a long history in the industry and knew what pitfalls to avoid and where to focus attention. It’s been a hard journey, but I’m thrilled to be still publishing books of my heart.

CTB: Long before STEM was a trend in children’s literature, you developed a track record for writing well received nonfiction. Where did you get the idea for writing about the board game match between AlphaGo and Lee Sedol?

Darcy: A.I.: How Patterns Helped Artificial Intelligence Defeat World Champion Lee Sedol was written when I got interested in A.I. I’m always looking kid-friendly ways to approach a topic. When I realized this story featured a world champion board game player, I thought it would appeal to kids. This game was actually a pivotal game in the development of A.I Before this, programmers tried to write rules for artificial intelligence programs. For example, they might write a rule on how to identify a photo of a cat.

Sample rules:
A cat has a round face and triangular ears.
A cat has a tail.

It worked up to a point. But what if the cat is curled up sleeping? Or perhaps, it’s stretched out to run hard as it chases a rat? It required too many rules to deal with all the positions a cat might take, and all the exceptions to the rules.

Instead, artificial intelligence today works because we provide thousands of images to a computer program, a big dataset. Each image is labeled either CAT or NOT CAT. The program analyzes the images and creates its own mathematical formula for identifying a cat.

The AlphaGo program was the first time such an A.I. program was used to challenge a human in a complicated board game. Amazingly, it won four out of five times. Also amazing—Lee Sedol, the world champion, found a way to defeat the A.I. once. The series of games redefined our relationship to A.I.

CTB: The illustrations are so fun, as is the layout of the book. How did you find that illustrator?

Darcy: Yes, Peter Willis is amazing! He has illustrated ten books with me now because his distinctive digital collages are fun and funny for kids. CTB: There’s a lot of concern now about AI eventually being able to do more than play games. But I love that you explain that even the phones in our pockets are partially fueled by AI technology. For example, I’m a frequent user of “Siri” and my Mac laptops as far back as OS9 were voice activated and had a digital assistant.  Did you have any “aha!” moments when researching this book?

Darcy: It was fascinating to dig into the discussion of A.I. technology. Understanding the difference in the two types of approaches to A.I. helps me make decisions about how I choose to use A.I. The rules-based approach was ultimately unusable because there are too many exceptions to any rule. When A.I. analyzes big datasets, though, it can mathematically account for exceptions. It’s a brilliant solution that means A.I. can tackle a wide variety of questions. For example, from a photo, it can predict if a mole is likely to be cancerous. Or, it can help create a chemical formula for a new medicine.

One problem with A.I. is that need for big datasets. Where will programmers find the data to feed into the program? Current lawsuits revolve around the allegedly illegal use of their copyrighted or patented information. Artists object to their copyrighted images being used to train A.I., and authors object to their copyrighted novels and writings being used to train A.I.

For me, that “aha” moment was understanding how current A.I. works. It’s easier to see how the programs can help my work or fit into a lesson plan when I understand that it’s trained on selected big datasets.

CTB: Your book ran into a roadblock at the US Copyright office. In scanning the text the office assumed the book was illustrated by A.I. rather than a real person. Can you tell our readers a bit about that experience? 

Darcy: The US Copyright has decided to check books to see if a book might include text or images created by A.I. I applaud this careful look at the books! However for my A.I. book, they asked if A.I. had been used to create the book. Just because the topic of the book is artificial intelligence doesn’t mean I used A.I. to create it! After I answered their question, they came back again and asked about this specific page of the book.

Here, the illustrator Pete Willis is demonstrating that some common objects are or are not based on A.I. programing. We know that artificial intelligence can be used for some cell phones, robots, and video games. But cats, ice cream and board games are not based on A.I. The US Copyright office specifically asked, though, if the images labeled “A.I.” had been created using an A.I. program.

“No,” I answered, “Peter Willis illustrated the entire book, even those labeled A.I.”

They accepted my answer and the book’s copyright was approved without any further questions.

CTB: I love that you call yourself, “Queen of Revisions” in your biography. Do you have any advice for young writers who might want to follow in your footsteps?

Darcy: Over the years, I have learned that I need to revise many times. When kids ask me how many revisions I do for a project, I answer, “Until it’s right.”

It’s not a matter of getting it right in three tries. It’s getting it right that matters.

If you want to write, read! Read everything you can, putting information and language into your memories so that when you need it, the words are there to draw upon.

Magnet coverDarcy: Peter Willis and I are collaborating on a new book, MAGNET: How William Gilbert Discovered that Earth is a Great Magnet. The story goes back to the middle of the 1600s when scientists were first figuring out what a magnet was. Gilbert gathered lodestones, natural magnetic stones, from around the world: from Greece came red and black lodestones; from Spain came white lodestones; Chinese lodestones were dark blood-red, while Ethiopian lodestones were amber or yellowish.

We follow the natural phenomena of stones that attract other stones as scientists start to unravel and make sense of the strange properties of the stones. Look for the book in April, 2024.
