Happy Birthday to WNDB! Five years ago, Ellen Oh created We Need Diverse Books (WNDB) to push the publishing industry “to help produce and promote literature that reflects and honors the lives of all young people.”
Since then, the non-profit has evolved from a small start-up and Twitter hashtag to a much larger organization that offers both activism on diversity in publishing and support for diverse authors. Their slogan, “Imagine a world in which all children can see themselves in the pages of a book” reflects today’s emphasis on all children – ensuring a wealth of books for all communities that features every community.
WNDB has also worked with Penguin Random House to publish several anthologies: Flying Lessons and Other Stories (2017) and Fresh Ink (2018)—and nowThe Hero Next Door, which just published on July 30 and includes the work of MUF’s own Suma Subramanian.
